Hi guys, remember me, Ana from sunny Spain, actually it's snowing right now. Anyway, about 2 weeks ago found the first baby newt/lizard/salamander or whatever it is in my house again. The first of 7 I guess, if it's like previous years. Managed to capture it and take piccies of it without hurting it guys, and then let it go far away from my house so it wouldn't come back. Still haven't seen the mother anywhere, which is what I really need to find so she doesn't keep having her babies in my garden. I'm sorry, but can't stand these things. Can you guys now tell me what it is from the pictures?
Thanks.

Yep that's a Moorish Gecko. Well done for catching one - they're quite fast. If I were you I'd give up trying to catch the adults. They are a very common species and new adults will return before you know it. One of the hazards (or luxuries)of living in Spain I guess.

since they are not a pest species (lizards are not normally considered pests or destructive since they provide useful services to mankind) the only way you could lessen their densities in your garden is by getting a smart small vertabrate eradication system...in other words a CAT! there is nothing you could spray in your area to get rid of them-anything poisonous to them is pretty much equally poisonous to you and your family, insect sprays are designed for insects only. you might want to reconsider your view of these animals by educating yourself on their role they play in the ecosystem and how beneficial they are to your garden by eradicating pests.

Seriously... what I'd give to live in a place with tons of geckos and lizards again. They make such wonderful pets when you can just catch them in your own back yard and house!

Hello Ana,

It´s definitely a Tarentola mauretanica "Salamanquesa común".
They eat mosquitos, spiders and other critters.
So better be happy to have them in your house.....

hasta luego
Michael

Thanks guys for all your stuff. The weird thing is that I'm on this site for a completey different reason to you lot. You are fans, and I don't like them at all, as with most things like that. Anyway, as you say, they eat spiders, mosquitoes etc, which I rarely have in the house, but still. However, when I do see them inside I do try and catch them and get them out as I really don't like having them inside.

Good luck to you all with your little pets and animals. Shame I can't share the same enthusiasm.

P.S. WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE WANT TO EAT A NEWT? ;-)

Man it is a shame you hate these things so much, i would love to have somthing gecko in my house.

Ana, listen to me, in about 10 years you will probably never see one again, much less anything wild. My advice is this, if you can catch them, just do me a favor and keep catching and releasing them. Mabye someone not as coldhearted will find one and actually feel lucky.

Turn of your damn tv and start enjoying what is left of our dying planet.

The species is a Tarentola mauritanica, the only gecko that can be found in Madrid province, but we must be serious, after all this discussion forum is about amphibians.

Ana_ Thank you very much for showing this photographs, finally all is clear.

Jeff_ You have reason, is sad, maybe in a nearly future we won't see these animals anymore.
But... keep geckos at home is a personal choice, even if I would do it without problems ;-)
