the help part of this forum does not let me post.
i need to know if my newt is dead or hibernating. I found him belly up under water, so i scooped him up and he was barely moving, and has stopped breathing. i placed him on a rock and he hasn't moved at all. he doesn't look dead and his eyes aren't glazed over. he is an oregon newt. Someone please help.

Sound like it is dead. I dont think Newt hibernate under water. But maybe I am wrong. And how cold is the water?

I have had a newt do this and pull out of it, It did take several hours. Best wishes!

I would put the newt in a plastic box with damp paper towels. If he does revive, he won't fall back in the water. Be sure the lid is secure. He's probably dead, though.

the water is room temp. he's been like this for 2 days now. thanks for your help

It probably wont go into hybernation in room temperture. I hope it is fine.

If he's been belly up for two days with no more signs of life, I'd have to agree that he's dead. I'm sorry.

his eyes never decomposed. and he was like that for 3 days until i got rid of him. noe i feel really bad because he could have benn alive

well. Maybe it is too cold in canada these few days that the eyes have no started decomposing yet.
It is getting so cold these days that my newts are loving it.

I hope you have better luck next time.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
