Hi,
I am a very new owner of an Oregon Rough Skinned Newt (Taricha Granulosa) and I LOVE it! His tank is near my computer and in the evenings I can watch him. He "sleeps" most of the day, but in the evenings he is more active. I love to watch him swim around and explore. Sometimes his movements are comical, as if he knows he is putting on a show. My 19 month old son, likes to stand near the tank--which is about eye level for him. He gets so excited when he sees the newt.

THANKS to everyone who makes this web site possible. I don't know what I would have done without all the help and information I've recieved here.

Stephanie, Thank YOU for being a responsible pet owner and even after others disagreed with your method of aquiring 'Steve', you stuck around and got as much info as you could. I wish you and 'Steve' and your kids many happy hours of watching his antics.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
