Both the newts I started out with have died. The FB died a while back, and the taricha was dead when I came home today.I don't know why.He was(I thought)shedding which I hoped was normal. But when I got home he was dead behind the filter.I had thought for a while that something just wasn't right. But he looked fine and was fairly active. The water quality was good and I offered a variety of food. However, clearly something was not good enough and I just don't know what it was.

Sigh...I still have my one very small FB and I hope nothing happens to it.Thanks for all the help with my other posts.

"I'm sorry to hear that. Did you keep the Taricha and the Cynops in the same tank?

No...I had them in different tanks. However, the shop owner had kept them together as he seemed to feel it was not a problem.I researched it here first and found that they should not be kept together.I got them a couple of weeks before Christmas, and as you can tell, they didn't last long.I really thought that I had enough experience with my other aquatic creatures to be able to manage keeping newts but I failed them. And they were so beautiful....

Sorry to hear about the newt Gail, I to have had a similar problem just last week. I had to separate one of my P waltl's because it was small and was getting bullied for food. So I put it in its own 10 gal tank and for a week it was great, the little guy was eating and seemed all fine. I came home on thursday and he was normal, I went out for 5 hours and came home only to find him floating on the surface and dead. I tested the water in all of my tanks and they are all in excellent condition. Im confused and dumbfounded as to why the newt died. Its frustrating to try everything you know to make sure the newt has a chance and its hard to take when everything doesnt pan out the way we hope. I hope that another incident never happens to you Gail.
