which purpose does the "balancer" have, is it really to keep balance?

Greets, Ingo

i going to take a whole bunch of photos of Plethodons and post them all up to get back at you for this!!!!

-balancers keep the larvae upright on the substrate till the front legs grow in enough to do the job, they absorb back into the body fairly soon after hatching

Hi Ingo.

Ditto what Paris just said and then this for good measure:

And while we're on the subject, I still haven't managed to track down this article:

Anybody who has it or can get ahold of it, please don't hesitate to also forward me a copy

Thanks for the information, Paris and Tim!
Since I am keeping Salamandra spp/ssp (who have already four legs when "hatching"/ given birth), I didn´t see the point

Organ formation caused by nucleic acid from different class.--Urodele DNA mediated balancer formation in goldfish.

Tung TC, Niu MC.

DNA was isolated from visceral organs of urodele and injected into fertilized eggs of goldfish. Approximately 1% of the young fish developed one balancer. From gross and microscopical structures, site of development, and nature of absorption, it resembles the balancer of urodelian species.

anyone up for some gene therapy??

4 morphs so far and 40 or so more to go. It's been a very smooth ride

(they'll all be eventually released into the area from where the egg sacs came from)

A pics of a few that are expected to morph in a day or two:

Had a question that I just want to be sure of. My marbled newt is a little over a year old and has started to develop and I noticed that he is starting to swell a little below his abdomen. I guess I’d like to know if they are his testes or if I need to be concerned.

Hello!!! I'm new to this website and idk how to ask a proper question on the designated spot yet, so I'll ask here, I'm a first time Axolotl owner, and my dad used to run an aquarium store, anyways... Orca, my Axolotl, seems to loose parts of her toes on one limb from time to time, I can't seem to find the problem. Tempature is well, she doesn't seem to have any infections or anything, though. And I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a vet in Brazil for amphibians that are in a reasonable distance to drive without stressing Orca out too much

Hello, I’m hoping for some advice please. Our Axolotl is about 7 months old. Till now no problem. Eating, growing and happy. He’s simply stopped eating. Everything looks fine, his gills look healthy and no apparent signs of sickness. He just swims past the pellets and bloodworm like he can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a blockage either. Any ideas and suggestions for treatment would be much appreciated. Thank you!
