As many of you might know I have been pursuing a field work position. I never had the opportunity for field work in my college, unlike some colleges where undergrads get to do it all the time. I have extensive lab experience but it doesn't translate to much in the eyes of those looking for field workers. This lack of field work has been limiting me in my applications for grad school, especially as I am trying to bypass the masters and go straight to a PhD program.
I have been applying for lots of fisheries/herpetology/riparian positions. I have a huge database of over 70 job sites that are related to ecology/fisheries/wildlife/GIS etc. I believe I have applied for over 60 positions that I was qualified for. Since most were not in Colorado I feel that my distance was also against me. I also didnt apply for positions I couldnt afford to take -i.e. those with too small stipends or non paying internships.
many positions dont even close till March 1, but I took the first one offered to me. I will be working with amphibians and fish for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. I will be working with spotted frogs and boreal toads first then move on to work with chubs and suckers. This is a 6 month position near Provo Utah.
