I found this salamander in a sump pit while changing a pump. I took it out because I didn't want it getting hurt by the new pump. It looks like it's leg is banged up and it won't move it's leg.I don't know anything about salamanders, I don't even know what kind it is or what environment it would like. Mostly though I don't know what to do about it's leg, I bought some mealworms but it won't eat them. I tried with an earthworm I dug up as well. I used tweezers and wiggled them in front of it's head for about 5 minutes a couple times in the last day.

Looks like a Tiger Salamander to me. If you want to keep it I would put it in a tank with a lot of substrate to burrow into, that would probably de-stress it a bit and it may feed after that, it does look quite skinny to me. I don't know about it's leg but I do know they are very good at healing.

I'm quite a ways away from any pet stores, as in a couple hours. Does that need to be some store bought stuff or can that just be dirt from the garden.

Well since he's from the wild I guess it should be fine. Try see if you can 'fluff' it up a bit so that it is easier to burrow into. A lot of moss/ leaf litter should be alright too.

It may not be eating because it is stressed from your presence, it is a wild animal. Try leaving some food in with it.
