So I bought a Giant Hong Kong Newt from my work after it had been lonely in the store for 6 months sitting in a habitat with Chinese Water Dragons. I know that it is a Warty Newt, but how can you tell between the types (I believe it is a hongkongensis but I want to be sure so that I can make his living arrangements perfect) Any suggestions or knowledge would do me well.

http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Salamandridae.shtml Go here and scroll down to the Paramesotriton list and go through the species to see what the one you have looks like. If you can post a picture that could help us identify it for you as well.

As for care, I don't know too much about this genus so other members will help you there.

Do you have some pictures to post of the newt? From what I've read these guys can be awfully hard to identify and it usually takes a rather skillful eye to determine who is who.

This guy lived with Chinese water dragons for six months? It's amazing he is still alive! They must have been little guys because my dragons would more than likely destroy a newt. Even worse is that someone was living in suboptimal conditions. Water dragons like it very warm compared to Paramesotriton.

The Water Dragons were pretty small (around 6 inches nose to tip of tail) and some Mountain Horned on the occasion. They were fed very well though (because thats my job). The lamps were all the way over on one side of the roughly 100 gal habitat so the water on the other side stayed pretty cool. We thought the newt had disappeared for 2 months because no one could find him hiding under all of the ornaments and whatnot so maybe thats how he survived the water dragons. I'll try to get a picture of him, but it may be from a phone (i dont have a camera) if that will help. Thanks guys

Like Abrahm said, they are very difficult to identify. With out a very good photograph it may be impossible to tell. A cell camera probably won't do the newt justice and it would be hard to tell in the photo, unless your cell phone's camera is top-notch of course:D.

Had a question that I just want to be sure of. My marbled newt is a little over a year old and has started to develop and I noticed that he is starting to swell a little below his abdomen. I guess I’d like to know if they are his testes or if I need to be concerned.

Hello!!! I'm new to this website and idk how to ask a proper question on the designated spot yet, so I'll ask here, I'm a first time Axolotl owner, and my dad used to run an aquarium store, anyways... Orca, my Axolotl, seems to loose parts of her toes on one limb from time to time, I can't seem to find the problem. Tempature is well, she doesn't seem to have any infections or anything, though. And I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a vet in Brazil for amphibians that are in a reasonable distance to drive without stressing Orca out too much

Hello, I’m hoping for some advice please. Our Axolotl is about 7 months old. Till now no problem. Eating, growing and happy. He’s simply stopped eating. Everything looks fine, his gills look healthy and no apparent signs of sickness. He just swims past the pellets and bloodworm like he can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a blockage either. Any ideas and suggestions for treatment would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
