I agree 100% here. If you don't have a local vet familiar with amphibians then doing a little research online and finding one that has adequate caudate experience regardless of location MIGHT be willing to give you a pointer or 2 about possible treatment or at least further are in this matter via a phone call.
This could be a long shot, but if you care about your newts then its worth a shot.
