How often would i have to change the substrate i fridge them in and how long do i need to prepare for this? Im going away in a month for 10 days - 2 weeks and cant help but think this would be the ideal time to do so especially seeing as its the summer and the house is starting to heat up! Any advice (ive already done a ton of research) just need the extra tips :)

Chinese wartys can be brought into breeding mode with a period of 1-2 months at 7-10 c. The temp should be increased gradually to 15-18 c by doing partial water changes. The female should have the choice to lay eggs on leaves that are in moving water, presumably for increased oxygen content passing over the eggs.

If your newts are recently imported, you need to be certain that they are in tip top condition before cooling them. It could be detrimental to cool them if they haven't fully recovered from their journey from China via the pet trade.

Best of luck with your breeding efforts, Its still rare to find captive bred stock of any Paramesotriton species despite the huge numbers that are exported every year from their homeland.

Thanks for the help, would it be ok to cool them in a fridge on coco husk?? And how long should i not feed them before doing so?

As these are w/c, I would suggest letting them adapt to their new surroundings and feed them up. That is what I am doing with mine
When our weather naturally cools, maybe move them to a cooler room?

I don't know, despite their popularity in the pet trade very little is known about the natural behaviour of most Wartys. The most up to date book I have says the males may begin to court females when the water i quite cold, so an aquatic enclosure is the way to go.

Thats probably why they arent bred very often in captivity :/ im used to breeding reptiles and have only just got into newts this is because i like abot of a challenge. Not sure how im going to cool the tank to those temps as i have trouble keeping it low as it is

I used a 2 gallon plastic storage box to cool my newts in the fridge, the usual 10 gallon rule doesn't really apply as the temp will be stabilized by the fridge and water quality can easily controlled by water changes. Depending on the size of your fridge these kinds of containers fit nicely on the bottom shelf.

If you fridge them make sure the lid is well ventilated,
dont use coco husk its no use for this, use damp kitchen roll and live moss, not sphagnum!!
they will need to be checked every 2-3 days to make sure they havent dried out.
Spraying lighty will help, dont feed them 10 days before you fridge them,as the food will rot in their gut,
I hibernated animals twice before.both times where Triturus.
I did accidentally breed Hong kong Warty's before.
They laid eggs on plastic plants, cold water change was enough to get them going and Photoperiod,The bulb had blown on the tank and all you could see during the day was white flash on the tails and the newts biting eachother.
I would move the tank to a cooler room and let them breed in their own time which is if its cooler then maybe Autumn. or move them to the garage Good luck with them
