Here are photos showing how I put holes in clay pots to use in setups like this one.

If you want a hole midway up the pot (rather than along the edge), it's also possible to make a hole using a "core" drill bit or forstner drill bit (search it on Google images, if you don't know what these are).

IMPORTANT: the clay chips more easily if you soak the pot in water overnight before chipping.

Be prepared for occasional mistakes. If the whole pot cracks in half (and it does sometimes), you can still use the broken pieces as animal hides. I find this works best if I chip the clay a little bit at a time. I generally use the edge of the pliers to smooth down the broken edge a bit after the hole is the size I want.

great, I have wondered how exactly you would put holes in it, now I know!

I use a dremel tool, but sometimes it goes too far.

My ways a bit easier. I go to the backyard and fire off a few rounds from my colt .45. Makes pretty good holes :)

Hello. I just noticed two notches, white small bubbles on the hind legs of one of my male newts.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail. I also asked this as an actual question in a thread in case anyone wants to answer it there instead of here
