first of all, im new to this but i really like the hobie. my little cousin bought two cynops orientalis about a moth ago and his mom gave them to me beacuse they were in pretty bad shape. there are two problems, one is that one has like a thin cloudy like layer on its eyes and two it appears that thay dont like the water
errr.gif
the stay out of the water and when the go in it they are desperate to get out what can i do i really need help.

First, what setup are you using?
Second, you need to read up on the cynops, there are many articals avalible from cuadata, but for the most part, I would seperate them unless someone thinks otherwise. The cloudy eyes are not good, and we need information about how they are being kept, the temps, and the water(dechlorinated?????)
give us some more info and we will help
and hurry

I wouldn't bother seperating them. If they were bought together, they'll already have each other's creepy crawlies.

Most newts go through aquatic and terrestrial phases. In the winter, most of them go terrestrial (at least in warmer climates, such as southern Triturus, Tarichas, etc).

Also, most newly acquired newts are very stressed from the shipping and moving to a new home. That's normal. Feed them small live food, such as earthworms, little crickets, bloodworms, blackworms, etc. If your water chemistry is correct (read the articles at www.caudata.org/cc for how to cycle your tank and maintain proper water chemistry), they will go into the water when they feel comfortable.

The cloudy eye could be due to a bacterial infection. I would attempt to feed them first before trying to treat the infection.

first, let me thank you guys for helping me out i really appretiate it. well i got both newts from my cousin two days ago i tried to learn as much as i could days before.when i got them they were in a plastic container with some rocks which i thought it was very cruel. well as for the housing i got a ten gallon tank two days ago a put a filter on the water and i put about 5 gallons of water(spring water from the store i dont know if i made the right decision) and i bought a floating island and i got some water plants ,and i tried to decorate it as best as i could in two days..for food i got them black worms. one of them, the one that looks healthier is eating but it's eating outside the water when i put some worms in front of it. the one with cloudy eyes its doing much. i still dont have a cooler for the temperature i might buy that today. i also think that they weren't used to deep water or they are a little uncormfortable in their new home. well thats abou

t it if you guys could help me out please i would really appretiate it and i'm sure my newts will too. thanks and comment back. ill put up pictures later on

Sounds like your off to a real good start. Water sounds good, housing and all that sounds good. You may try to take some water out, in winter, as Joan said, they are more terrestrial, mine is. Try buying some frozen bloodworms for them, I think you ment to say that the one with the cloudy eyes isn't doing much, but try offering it some bloodworms and black worms, It's probably stressed, aside from whats causing the cloudy eyes, which is hard to know exactly what is going on with that. It's possible that it may just need to shed. By the way, im not sure you can find a "cooler" (actually refered to as a chiller) for a tank that small. A good temp range is 60-70 degrees, and you can buy a digital thermometer for about 20 bucks, I know Flukers just came out with one that has temp and humudity. You can float frozen water bottles without lables/glue in the tank to bring down the temp if needed. Hope they are enjoying their new home!

Oh, and what type of filter are you using? That could stress them too, depending on what kind it is and how it is set up, or if its loud. You may not even need it. You can also buy some java moss for them or some other types of aquatic plants, newts love that.

ok thanks for everything again. i'll take your advice on the water. i think their temperature is a little high i'll try to lower it down. as for the filter im using this type of filter, the one that says corner filter http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/filters.shtml

just one question is it ok if i divide the tank i've seen it in some pictures and i thought it might be better. like 3/4 water and the rest land? thanks again they look a little more happier

When you say "divide" the tank, what are you considering? If you can get them aquatic, it's better to keep them in a mostly-aquatic setup so that they stay that way. The FAQ on the CC site have some other suggestions for getting them aquatic.

Where did you get your avatar photo?

you may even try to put something under the tank to make it un-even and so the area thats underwater is deeper and there is more land. Just a thought, I have used this before and It has worked well. So the filter is and air powered sponge right?

Jeff, putting the tank on a slant is OK if there is very little water in it. With a substantial amount of water, it risks breaking the tank. Tanks are not designed to carry weight in a slanted position, and water is surprisingly heavy. I wouldn't recommend this on a public forum, as some readers may not have the common sense to realize the danger.

I'm sorry Jen, I ment only try this with a low level of water, and only a few(2-2.5) inches of slant a the maximum. I forget somtimes advice can be misinterpreted.

hey thanks for the help
i'll give you guys an update on the c.o:
they seem to be more comfortable even do they dont stay under water

.the healthier one eats but still outside the water. the one with cloudy eyes likes to stay close to his buddy when the other newt moves the open with cloudy eyes tries to stay close.the is a question though . should i put gravel or not? and another one is it better to feed the frozen blood worms?

oh yea and to answer jennifer's question i got the picture from the web site livingunderworld.org

well the gravel is pretty much more work, it acts as a biological filter, but It is really hard to clean and after a few weeks if it get stirred up the tank will need to be totally cleaned. I would say don't bother, I just redid a tank with substrate and now its only a matter of time before I have to do some serious cleaning. However, I have a submerusable filter and I have recently added some hose to it so I can fill the tank up from 1 inch deep water to 4 and then "vacume" the water and then take it out with the attached hose. Im not totaly sure however about the gravel though, I think I would be better off without it. I think aquatic plants and a little bit of gravel/substrate with rocks would work best.

There is no "best" food, but earthworms seem to be a favorite around here, but bloodworms, blackworms and such are good too. They will eat small crickets for treats too.

Mario, it is ILLEGAL to use photos taken from most web sites. If you read the small print, all material on Living Underworld is protected by copyright. Please remove your photo. You may use photos that you take yourself, or have written permission to use.

ok i got rid of the picture thanks for the information i wasnt aware of it ill be taking pictures soon. and thanks for the comment jeff

well my newts are doing great well at least one of them. the one that eats is now entering the water and doesn't seem to freak out anymore. on the other hand, the other newt (the one with cloudy eyes) doesnt eat and doesnt move that much i have a feeling that he isnt going to make it. if you guys have any other idea on how to make it eat it would be great thanks for the help though.

Yeah, Its hard to tell, its probably an infection of some type, but I can't even get my healthy newt to eat this month. Eventually you can try "force-feeding" it, but I wouldn't go that far yet. What all have you tried feeding it? Sorry I missed you in the chatroom too by the way, I was eating dinner.
