I cannot tell, he's got that constant poker face going on (you guys know what I mean), and since he chills around a lot I cannot tell the difference when he's still. He also doesn't react to my hand when I wave it in front of him unless I stick it in the water which I do not like to do because he thinks its food Q_Q, I was wondering if there was a way to tell when he's awake or not when still

Just leave him alone, he will very quickly grow tired of the constant poking and prodding. They will be "sleeping" when they're still

Why do you want to know? Intend to sneak up on him and put his hand in warm water?

What an odd question, but interesting all the same  When "sleeping" he will be very still, possibly sitting in a plant or just hanging out on the substrate. If they're a luecisitic or albino they will have some noticeable color drainage when they're resting, with gills often changing from a luscious red/pink to sometimes nearly white! He will fan his gills occasionally and....not do an awful lot  Mine are usually all asleep in the morning until the lights go on...then its "FOOOOOOOD!"

o.o I do not poke and prod...as I said I sometimes wave in front him on the other side of the glass and very occasionally I put my hand in the water sometimes because he likes to uproot my plants and then hang around them, I try to straighten them out and then WHAM, ninja bite. or sometimes I put my hand in because I have to feed my amano shrimp with sinking algae wafers (I put it near their fav driftwood spot)--

Scares the bejezzuz out of me sometimes.

LOL na I was curious if there was a way to tell :D, I ask the weirdest of things o.o like how do they poop and stuff.

I was under the impression that axolotls, or any caudates for that matter, don't sleep? Could be wrong but I've never seen them sleep.

I think it is a type of albino, I did notice his gills sometimes being paler and then a cherry red, thanks for the answer :D!!! Yeah I ask odd things sometimes XD

That's why I usually put it in brackets. It's quite obvious they rest but its a very...deep rest lol. Mine are totally oblivious to anything when they're resting...they might as well be asleep!

You're welcome :D A good indication of color are their eyes. If they're pale with red/pink eyes, they're albino. If they're pale with black eyes, they're luecistic  Sometimes luecistics eyes can look slightly blue!
