I used to try to find every terrestrial salamander in the cage and put in them, one or two at a time, in a plastic container such as the kind that ground coffee comes in, with a cover and hole and screen in cover. I use this method for fruitflies and crickets. Is it really necessary? I keep most of my salamanders in terraria ground coconut husk fiber and chunks of moss over the fiber. If I place crickets or fruit flies in the salamander cage, do they know to come from under their hiding spaces and look for food?

The process you describe (if I've well understood) is stressing.
Salamanders can find their living food themselves in the terrarium.
Of course, some details are important :
- a lid with a fine net is necessary to avoid fruit flies or roaches escapes. Crickets or woodlice usually don't climb on clean glasses.
- avoid crevices, little holes where your salamanders won't go easily. That will become a refugia for little preys.
- If you use earthworms, prefer anecic species, which will move up and down and which will be caught during the night.
