How to distinguish bloat from less harmful conditions

Izzie seems to be in trouble again. A couple of weeks ago he seemed bloated and floated on the surface without submerging. Izzie is 12 years old and was fed only frozen blood worms until I adopted him. I started feeding him life black worms when I got a second T.gran about a month ago. I wonder if his body is not equipped to digest life food anymore. I isolated him for a couple of days and fed him frozen blood worms only and he seemed to improve. I transferred him back to the big tank. My other T. gran Moe is very young and eats pretty much only blackworms and is doing great. I wasn't sure that it was actually the food that had caused Izzie's discomfort, so I fed both again life black worms. A week and a half later Izzie seems to be doing worse than before. I just isolated him again. He floats, looks bloated (the head and limbs are not bloated, mostly his abdomen) and barely moves and it seems that he has little black streaks on the side of his bloated belly and there is one black dot on his back, which I tried to capture in the image. Is it possible he just can't digest life food? How can I tell the difference between constipation and bloat caused by a bacterial infection (besides the entire body being bloated vs. the abdomen)? Any other ideas what could be wrong?

Sorry to hear about the continued problems for Izzy. Unfortunately, I don't have any good advice. I may be that Izzy is just an old newt and having problems in general for that reason. You have done the only thing I would have suggested, which is to isolate him in shallow water. I doubt there is much else you can do. If blackworms are the problem, I think you need to train the younger newt to eat bloodworms.

I just contacted a vet who specializes in exotics here in Chicago. If Izzie looks worse tonight than he did this morning I might bring him in.

Good luck Alexandra!

I'm glad you found a good vet. They are hard to find.
