Hi everyone I have just bought a secondhand 4ft fish tank to house two axolotls that I plan to get soon. The tank came with a filter, large rock that looks like its from the beach or river and toys for the bottom of the tank. I have no idea what was in the tank before I got it. My questions are,
1. What should I use to clean the tank out? I have been told to use rock salt, water and a clean sponge that doesnt have and chemicals on it. Just to wipe over the tank with the sponge and salt water. By someone else I was told to use Milton ( baby sanitizing soloution, the stuff to sterilizer baby bottles). After I clean the tank out should I fill it straight away or can I leave it for a week before I fill it. I want to set stuff up week by week.
2. Can I use the same toys, rock and filter if they are cleaned or should I throw them out and start over?
I plan to get a lot more items for the tank to keep my axolotls happy.
Thanx;)

I would just clean the tank out with plain water and an aquarium-safe scrubber. I think rock salt might scratch the glass, so I wouldn't recommend that. Personally, I wouldn't bother to sanitize it, but if you want to, use diluted bleach. I'm afraid a household product (Milton) might contain detergents or other additives that would stick to the glass or be toxic.

If the rock looks like it came from the beach, it might be some sort of coral? If so, do not use it, as it will affect the pH of the water. The filter is probably OK, but clean it out well and figure out a way to disburse the current so the axies don't feel it. I'm not sure what you mean by "toys"... like ornaments? They are probably OK.

Thanx Jennifer Macke for you advice. Yes I did mean ornaments, I just couldnt think of the right word when I was writing.
