I googled it and couldn't seem to find the answer ... How much sand should I be using for my tank?

Enough sand to fill about a inch to a inch and a half, Anything more will eventually cause anaerobic pockets if you don't move the sand around.

The VERY general rule is a pound of substrate per gallon. A 20lb bag of sand gave me about 1/2 in in my 20 long.

I had read with Axolotl tanks its different ... I know the rule with fish tanks :)

I had sand that was around 1 and 1/2" thick and i found that i was getting gas pockets and the sand was turning black, so i now have 1/2" and they are quite happy with it :)
