How many Spotted Salamanders do you all think would be comfortable in a 40 gallon tank. I'm asking because i found a guy willing to sell me a 40 gallon tank for $40.00. And my GF and i have been wanting to get at least one more salamander.

a 40 gallon long tank should be able to hold 2 or 3 spotted sals, i'd take a conservative guess that 2 should be able to live in a standard 40 gal without any problems arising, 3 would also be able to fit but as im not very knowledgable about spotted sals i would air on th eside of caution.

tank specifics would also help us out, like is it taller than it is long or is it a cube, that sort of thing, i know they say that 3 tigers can live in a 20 gal long but i wouldn't feel comfortable with so many guys in my tank.

just to answer your question however, 40 gallons should be able to house 4 animals (10 gallons per animal) so 3 animals should be able to live in your 40 gal without issue.

yup your still awesome... and tyvm i was thinking 2-3 should be good. and i dont know the full demensions yet, i have a 30g and a 40g tank waiting for me to look at, i might go with the 30g tank and 2 sals

good choice, but a 40$ 40 gallon is incredibly good, i got my 20 gal long at a thrift store for 25$, at the actual pet store a 10 gal cube would set me back 40-50$ and they heavily used too, god i love free-market...

I would say you could fit way more if you had plenty of hiding spaces and a deeper substrate(3-8inches). They are not aggressive towards each other unless they are significantly smaller than each other. I have kept two in a plastic shoe box with no problems. I cleaned it thoroughly twice a week and fed them three times a week. Just keep an eye on them. More space is always better though. Tigers would need more room because they get quite aggressive during feeding time but I havent seen that kind of aggression in spotted salamanders. I would say 6-10 could comfortably fit in a 40 gallon breeder. If it is a 40 gallon tall, then its a competely different story.

well then we will definitely not have any problems, its not just tall, its wide as well, its got a good shape to it, we are only going to have 2-4 Spotted sals at most once we get this aquarium.

I'm just going to make sure i get enough of that real moss i bought at Petco, Our sal Wall-E never comes out from it since we put it in, he loves it way more than the little underground tunnel he dug under his fake log house lol
