Ok I am looking to buy sand for my tank ... and While I know the rule for fish which is a lb a gallon which gives you about 3/4 - 1 inch of substrate

So since you barely want the bottom covered do I want about 1/4 of that? So for a 40 gallon I would only want 10 lbs?

I used five pounds on two 10 gallons (veryyyy thin layer - 1/4 of an inch maybe?) if that helps at all...?

So 10 pounds for 40 gallons sounds about right to me.

so 5 lbs covered 400 inches floorspace to a 1/4 inch depth :) certainly good to know :)

Of course I'm just wildly estimating with the numbers, but 5 pounds was enough to fully cover both tanks (no bare bottom showing) :>

well thats all they need :) thank you. 10 lbs will cover 800 sq inches floor space which is more than a 40 long or breeder
