One of my sword-tails developed a swollen throat and a cloudy eye the other day, and so I put it in a quarantine tank and gave it a salt bath (even gently squeezed some down the thing's gullet in case its tongue was swollen). After a few short salt baths and a couple of days out of the tank its already looking better. However, I'm afraid to put it in with the other one just yet. If my little newt really is recovering, when could I return it to its home?

I would wait until it looks completely recovered and is eating normally.

As another suggestion, you should look carefully at the newt's regular home and make sure it is a totally healthy environment. Do you test for water parameters (pH, ammonia, etc)? Do you do partial cleanings or total cleanings when you clean the tank?

I haven't done any water testing recently (ran out of strips, the shop is across town, no car, blah blah), but I only do partial water changes; no more than half, and that's only if the water is unusually filthy. The newt in question has been eating normally.

Thanks for the help!
