My axolotl babys hatched about 2 days ago, they were about a week old, they dont really have a head yet so I dont know if I'm suppost to feed them already.I don't want to starve them. They are very alive and very active, Should i try to feed them already? I think they were forced out of the shell/egg/slimy shield by their mother. I dont have any live food right now, the only thing I have handy is some pallets.

Depends on the water temperature. Newly hatched axolotl larvae generally do not eat for the first five to seven days until they absorb the reminder of the egg yolk. Warm water temperatures will speed up their metabolism so they will need live foods much sooner. From there they will eat anything that moves and is small enough. Generally speaking, they will not accept pellets or frozen foods until they are about a month in age.

When you say they 'don't have a head', do you mean they're still developing? Even newly hatched axolotls have a distinct face.

If you have them in with the mother, chances are they will become food for her, as axolotls do not have a problem with eating their own young.

Hi,

I´m a little bit confused about that. Do you mean they hatched only one week after their eggs had been laid? Normally the larvae need 2 weeks for developing. What was yout water-temperature? In warm water they will hatch earlier, but only one week - I´ve never heard of that. I´m not sure if they are really fully developed. Could you post a photo, please.

After hatching their mouth is closed and it will open some days later. For that, there is no need to feed them at the moment.

Mine generally eat in the first 24 hours too.
