I have heard of people using this type of filter efficiantly in axolotl tanks, allthough i dont understand how it works.

Do you need a pump to attach to the big hole at the top to push water through or do you attatch an air pump tube to the little hole on the left and the water gets drawn in through air uplift? Or both?

where do you attach the bits and pieces?

is that a sponge filter? If so I've seen two types of sponge filters. The traditional kind in my mind are powered by air pumps. I've seen a few sponge filters that run off internal pumps, but I feel like that defeats the purpose of a sponge filter. Access to all that oxygen is what makes a sponge filter such a good place for bb. I'm guessing it's an air pump kind, because I don't see a plug connected to it.

It is a sponge filter. I know this on takes an air pump, and i think it works by blowing air through the little air hole and making bubbles come out the big hole at the top, drawing water in then out through the 2 sponges?

I think you might be right, I didn't see that little air tube bump

It looks like it works on the same principal as an undergravel filter, try attatching the airline to the small connection in the middle.

Hi, I have ordered two of these and am not entirely sure how to use them either. Have you worked it out? Do you have it fully submerged? Is the larger pipe a water outlet?

Also what size airline do you use with it? The seller (from ebay) was unable to provide me with any of this information!!

Anna.

Without seeing it in person, I would guess that you need it fully submerged. An airline connects to the inside of the large tube. The bubbles from the airline travel up the large tube, creating suction, pulling water in through the sponges and up the large tube with the bubbles.

It's an air driven sponge filter. You hook the air hose up to the nipple and an air pump with an air line. It has to be totally submerged. I use lots of sponge filters similar to this. The ones I use are made by azoo. I purchase them from Drs. Foster and Smith. I like them because they do not sit on the bottom of the tank and they provid great biological filtration.

I have the exact same sponge filter, two actually.

Kaysie is spot on !!

Here is where the air line tubing goes,!

great! will 2 of these be sufficient in a 2ft tank for one axie? and how many would you have in a 3ft tank for 2?

I imagine 2 would be adequate for a 3 foot tank with 2 axolotls. The only way to be sure is to put them in, and do regular water testing to make sure they provide enough area for beneficial bacteria to grow (therefore making your ammonia levels 0).
