How do I treat this?

I don't know what happened. I just want to treat this before it gets any worse.

I'm not sure what the problem is from the picture - is that a weird growth on the gill? Or a discoloration of the gill? Truthfully, I'm not sure what the appropriate treatment would be in either case. You may need to consult a qualified vet.
