The faq doesnt really say so Im guessing I go by cloaca only? Or are there designs, traits, etc that I should know about? Ive had mine for 8 months and have no idea how old they are. Some seem older than the others but who knows. I can post pics, just tell me what kind of poses you need. I have pics up in my gallery incase people want to peek there. Thanks for the help.

The cloaca rule holds true during the breeding season. Male will also develop a high finned tail during the breeding season and nuptial pads. You can also look at the back legs. Males have broder ones.

Post two pics, one of each animal from the side. Notos are usually pretty straight forward to distinguish, particularly if you have both sexes.

Okay I snapped these shots and I hope theyre okay. I had to stop after awhile cause my camera just isnt that great so I had to keep taking multiples and the newts looked to get very aggitated. I can take more another time though if others see fit. Heres what I have for now. Any ideas?

The second and last photos look like females - note the bulge in the belly that occurs particularly towards the hind legs. The smaller one in the fourth photo is probably male. This would be a lot easier if you posted photos of each animal labelled as to which animal it is and from the same position.

Here are my best guesses. It would be helpful if we could tell which photos show the same animal again.

Photo#1: Male, totally sure. The wide back legs give it away.
Photo#2: Female, pretty sure. Narrow legs (maybe?) and plump body.
Photo#3: Male, pretty sure.
Photo#4: Top one female. Other one unclear.
Photo#5: Female, pretty sure.
Photo#6: Male, very sure.
Photo#7: Left to right: male, male, female - not very sure
Photo#8: Male, pretty sure.

Ah it was dumb of me not to label which is which. I will edit my post. I guess I can put their names as Newt1, etc is too impersonal :)

Well I see now that the edit option is missing from my thread post. Whats up with that?

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
