How big/old do they need to be before breeding?

Hey all. I have 5 sweet young axolotls (born last october) that are about 18 cm long. With my adults at 23 cm or so, they aren't quite there, but are getting close. I want to try breeding again and one of my males has a really swollen cloaca. How close do they need to be to full adult size to breed? Are first clutches usually successful?

Hi Monomike,

Axolotls are usually sexually mature from about 5-6 months of age, however it's recommended to wait until the axolotls are at least 18 months old before deliberately trying to breed them.

Hi. They will, if capible choose breeding before reproducing so it is best to let them fully delvelop first to avoid problems with them and their young
