So I finally made holtfreters solution, and it made the tank all foggy and its settling into a whitish film on the bottom... did I do something wrong? Will the fog go away eventually?
I used the recipe from here
which makes 80 gallons worth, and you're supposed to do 1 cup for every 5 gallons. So I put 4 cups in my 20 gallon tank (and intended to put a cup in each time I change the water which is a 5 gallon change) I'm hesitant to do it to my other two until I know I haven't done something wrong 😅

Ah nevermind it's cleared up considerably 😅 i think its fine.

which solution did you use? holtfreters, holtfreters + magnesium sulphate, steinburg's, johns.
if you used a solution that contains bicarbonate of soda then the cloudiness and powder residue will be either calcium carbonate or potassium carbonate, this is because bicarbonate of soda reacts with both calcium chloride and potassium chloride to for calcium and potassium salts.
the cloudiness will dissipate over time and neither salt are harmful.
one of the ways to reduce the effect is to mix the bicarbonate separately then add it, more info here https://ambystoma.uky.edu/genetic-s...Issues-1-12/archive/Issue 3/09-16brothers.pdf

Just plain holtfreters from my understanding. No magnesium. Thank you for the suggestion to use it and the reply! 🥰 here's to hoping my axies will be happier with it 💙

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
