HOB Ha-ha!

Okay, the title was just random. Anyhoo, I have HOB filter, a Red Sea Nano Filter. The water level is low and I put a little cup in there to break up the flow before it reaches the water. I would like to know;
1. Is this sufficient filtering?
2. Do you think I will need an air pump/stone for the tank? (which is 10 gallons, er... so-and-so Liters [why does that word produce an error?]. Bah! I hate the U.S. customary system.)

Whether or not you need an airstone depends on what kind of lid is on the tank. If it's solid glass, yes. Otherwise, no. I'm not familiar with that filter, but it's probably adequate. Can you take a photo of it, or post a link to one?

hobs normally provide great airation anyway cause the water comes into contact with the air as its falling back into the tank

no matter what brand it is they virtually all look the same.

Plush imo you wouldnt need a ait stone with this type of filter. The filter itself is sufficient. Given that the HOB filters have a waterfall effect, theres already enough water movement as it is. I suppose it also depends on how your axie/s take to the bubbles an air filter/stone give off too. Alot of ppl here say there axies love it.. mine HATE it... huge stress factor for them, i think they are scared thats the bubbles will attack them LOL poor things!! SO i cant use them - i also have a HOB filter (with a 160+ litre tank).

So, as i said.. it wouldnt be necessary, but if they dont mind it.. i think the air filters/stones are a set off to a tank - they look great.

Also... taking into account the size of your tank (approx. 40 liters... i think lol).. i dont think you would need one at all.

Hope ive made sense... and Jen.. i hope i helped with the link (coz im not too sure whether u were after the design of the brand HOB filter plush has..... or whether its was a HOB filter in general).

(Maybe it uses magic fairy knomes that use chemical magic to clean the water, I don't know. I put my own carbon in there to assist the faries.)

careful with carbon, it isnt necessary unless your removing meds as it can mask problematic smells etc that youd want to fix

Jojo - mine seem to love the air stone. Have found them sitting there occassionally with their whole heads thru the air bar with the bubbles going round their face.

I like carbon because it removes chemicals, toxins, discolorations and other contaminants. It does a pretty good job at what it does.It made what I thought was a very clear tank even clearer.Instant win.

is there any reason you have bad chemicals in your tank, toxins or discolourations? unless you have driftwood or peat in your filters your water should remain relatively clear. i have carbon in some of my aging bins for discus etc as we live in a rural area but im thinking of taking it out as chlorine kills any pesticides etc im told. im very hesitant to use it unless its to absorb meds

The water got clearer since I put the carbon in one of my other pet's tank filter. I change some of the water weekly and ammonia hasn't been a problem since after the tank was cycled, so carbon can't hide stuff from me. I don't really know the before and after of Epsilon the axolotl's tank because I always used carbon in his (now somewhat confirmed on gender, yay!) tank. Kinda like comparing city air to er... not-city air. Life exists in both, but the not-city air would be preferred by axolotls if they had lungs. Couldn't hurt...

yes you can use carbon but just in the beginning to clear your tank than you should remove it cause as it removes all kinds of stuff from your tank it sends it back to the water within a month.
