I've got 2 pieces of pipe for my axie which although doing the job are not the most attractive things I've ever seen. I was wondering if I sould use a terracotta plant pot instead to make a cave and embed it in the sand? Would this be ok if it wasn't varnished, would that be better, I don't know if it'll effect the tank? I have also seen things with half coconut shells used as a cave, would this be better? If anyone knows of a natural or at least natural looking aquarium cave that'll fit in a 18x10x12in tank and obviously give alfie space to move that would be great too!!!;)

You can use terracotta plant pots/pipes or pieces of slate, there are some that use coconut shells.

We had some very unattractive very white pvc pipes.

After finding this forum a few years ago, we found some wonderful ideas/setups through the photo gallery part like covering with aquarium silicon and stones/river rocks, which we did. We also use slate pieces stacked to make a cave but smoothed the sharp edges down before placing in the tank. My sister broke a couple of her smaller terracotta pots (so they're in half pieces and smoothed the edges) and placed them round her tanks.

I put lots of plants around mine , artificial and real, it makes it look nicer!

I agree with kapo check the tanks and setups section or visitwww.axolotl.org and check the setups there.

Slate is cool as you can stack it to make tunnels and caves and it looks good to.

Good luck and post some pics when your done.
