Hello,

I am new here and have gone through nearly all of the site and threads. I just have a few questions about my newts. (Forgive me for not using the proper species name, still learning)

I have a paddletail that I have had for about 9-10 years now. He seems very aggressive because I can't keep anything in the tank without him eating or trying to eat it. I also believe he killed and/or ate the other paddletails that were in the same tank years ago. I'm not sure if they are totally aquatic but he will never leave the water. I have rocks that are above the water level and have never seen him up there. He is very healthy and very fat so I don't believe he is ill. Also would it be wise at this point to add a female to the tank with him? I was hoping to start a family!

I also have a japanese firebelly that I thought was male.. but yesterday I found what looked to be 2 eggs in the tank. Now question is, can they still lay eggs without fertilization? He/she is very social and active, will swim back and forth in front of the glass during feeding time. He/she usually follows my hand around as I try to feed him/her.

Thanks!

Hi,
Are you sure it is a japanese firebelly(cynops pyrrhogaster)? Not cynops orientalis(chinese firebelly)?

The newts that is sold as paddletails are pachytriton labiatus.

Pachytritons are very aquatic and if I understand correctly, very difficult to breed.
They are also very aggressive, not the ideal pet directly

Hey!

Thanks for replying!

Yes I am sure it is cynops pyrrhogaster because I also have a cynops orientalis. I was hoping to breed one of them in the future once I can buy more equipment.

I am still confused about the eggs though, they do LOOK like eggs and are clinging to abit of moss hanging off a rock.

Also I assume that Cliff (pachytriton labiatus) will never have any friends?

So, can newts lay eggs without fertilisation? I was wondering that too.
thanx

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
