We have been looking into getting a salamander from the spot we gather our drinking water on the mountain side. We gathered acouple of moss covered rocks and one that had a couple of snails on it we were going to buy a 5 gallon tank in the next week or so and then capture a salamander when we gathered water next. Well when we got home we noticed a baby(when I say baby I mean it might be an inch long tail included) in the jug we had the water and rocks in. We are totally unprepared to have one yet, as of right now we have some peat moss and the rocks in a dubble bubble tub with some sticks and stuff in it so it can get out of the water.

Any ideas on what to do? What do they eat? ALL other help will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Does it still have gills, or does it look like a small adult? Any idea what kind it might be? Without knowing the species, it's hard to say how it should be set up, or even if it should be in water.

Thanks we have decided this hobby is not for us right now. We already have pets that require lots of attention.....fish.

good job chad
It's often a hard decision to bring back cute animals back to nature. Maybe you'll find time later, I'm sure you would do great. We'll be happy to answer your questions.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
