Hi Lindsey, you've come to the right place (but perhaps the wrong sub-section of the forum). Read:
www.axolotl.org
Then read through the posts in the Axolotl sections of this forum.

If you have never kept fish, then there is quite a lot of information you need to learn about keeping a healthy aquarium. That is really just as important as information about axolotls themselves. Good luck!

Ryan, what reason do you have for suggesting that Linsey acquire a mudpuppy and not an axolotl? I know you like your mudpuppy and possibly you feel maligned that other people suggested that you get an axolotl, but that is no reason to bring that here.

She asked questions about the Axolotl, specifically. Their are many reasons for her to want to purchase this animal. She likes the albino form. They are more likely to be healthy due to their being less collecting and shipping stress. There is a smaller problem with parasites and she would be sure of getting a younger animal and quite possibly she would be able to communicate with the breeder about care issues. All huge benefits.

Why should she consider a mudpuppy? What benefits does acquisition of a Necturus sps over an axolotl convey?

Linsey, here are some exellent links you may find interesting on Axolotl enclosures and aquarium maintenance. I hope you find the information you seek and if you get an Axolotl, it should be an excellent pet. All the people in the axolotl forum can't be wrong

Tank Setups

Cycling the Aquarium And important piece of information for setting up a tank for fish or axies!

A general overview of water quality in general

Sorry, I just love them so much, axies are great too. Oh and good thinking on posting the link for cycling a tank, it's so sad to see fish or other aquatic animals in a noncycled aquarium.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
