Hi Karen
Nice picture! Can you post some pictures of the whole tank set up? Are they male and female?

Hi Alberto, I did post a pic of the tank in a separate post (I think it says my nvv tank). I brought one newt to a vet this summer and he said he was male (but wasn't quite sure), I think the other is male too. But either way, the names John and Paul stay!

Actually, both vets I took my newt to were very nice, but not very knowledgable about newts at all. I think I knew more than they did.

Karen, that's a common occurance with vets. I'm very blessed to have two fairly knowlegable herp vets in my area.

Does your local university have a vet school? If so, try finding an exotics vet there.

Hi Joan,
Actually, one of the vets I took my nvv to WAS an exotics specialist! he was great and very kind and gentle but had a hard time making a diagnosis. I understand the difficulties: the newt is very small, so it's hard to take any blood sample, you can't check heartbeat etc, and even the x-ray was tough to take! But, that's not what you want to hear when your newt is ill. Most vets here didn't even want to me to come and and bring the newt. Have to check on the universities though, I don't believe they have a vet school.

Karen re vet school - I believe there is only one vet school in NY and it is Cornell. Not sure where you are in relation to that area geographically.

Karen, this is true. I try to make my own diagnosis before going to the vet, as he consults the same book I have (Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry). If you have more than a few animals, it's an invaluble resource to have. Of course, only the vet can prescribe the medication, but going in and telling them basically what the problem could be is very useful.

Most exotic vets deal with birds and reptiles. Amphibians are often seen as 'disposable' pets, sadly.
