Hi all,

I was clearing out a load of boxes and rubble from the side of my garden, and I found about 20 or so newts at various points. Most of them were under the bottom plastic boxes, and they were all common newts.

Obviously they've created quite a habitat in the garden, so I want to know the best way to keep them there and to create a new and natural place for them which they can thrive in.

I have a small pond with fish, and I lay the newts that I found by that (it's surrounded ny overgrown vegetation)
The house backs onto a large private field.

What are the best plants to go for which would help the newts?

What are the best ways to attract insects that the newts feed on?

Would the newts that are currently there take to a load of new rocks if I lay some by the pond?

Basically any advice would be great in terms of creating a new environment for the newts that have set up home in the garden, to replace the old one that I unfortunately had to remove.

Cheers.

Adding big flat rocks or wood can make perfect hides for the newts. Some wide low to the ground Plants with larger or very thick vegetation would be good plants to add. Keeping the garden moist can help attract worms that the terrestrial efts eat. I’m not sure how to attract food for the aquatic adults. Hope I helped! Good luck.

Seria bueno, que esparcieses por la zona, montones de hojas caídas de los arboles y troncos medio podridos, el jardín parecerá descuidado, pero atraerá a xilofagos (comedores de madera), babosas, lombrices y numerosos insectos. ¡ Suerte !.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
