ok. I have had newts for a while but i havent been feeding them much live stuff. I heard that some people feed them common misquitoe larvae. Is it safe if i just collect them and what would you suggest using that i can just collect as the two pet stores in scottland dont appear to hold any.

Phoebe,
You posted three times within 10 minutes. Have some patience. Go to caudata culture and checkout the articles (I'm too busy to post a specific article link at the moment). Give more information first - What kind of newts do you have? Approximately how big are they? What is the enclosure size and how is it setup? How many individuals do you have? What does the temperature average within the enclosure? What have you been feeding them before? It is important to give specific information when asking questions.

Mosquito larvae are safe to collect and feed to newts. The only problem is that you don't want them hatching into mosquitoes in your house. Perhaps the petstores have live bloodworm instead?

I have captive bred smooth newts, their tank is 27 gallon and i have 5, one individual. They have great hiding places and a dim floresent light.

Thanks for the misquitoe confirming. The fact they would hatch adult would worry me too. But none of the stores have live stuff. Any other stuf i can get in a garden??

At the moment i dont have a flat landsurface to put the bottlecap on for the worms, i am though, building a flat one so that will happen, but only little ones though.

Ok. Sorted, i know have a nice, flat surface and it has a milk cap with mud and 2 little worms in it, thanks.
