My newrs dont seem to be interesested in thier food(bloodworms, brineshrimp).plus they keep attacking each other AGGRESIVLY,they both bite each other and then curl up into a ball at the same time.NEED HELP.FAST
Try chopped up (bite-sized) live earthworms. Feed directly with a tweezers or an eyedropper that you suction onto the worm and stick in front of each newt's face so he/she can smell it....what species newts do you have? What environment do you have them in?
yeah, and if they are biting and attacking, you may want to seperate them right now for the sake of injuries and infections that are really hard to treat. Do they have wounds?
If they are very aggressive, you may need to separate them or get a bigger tank with more hiding places. It is important to know what kind of newts they are. http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/firebelly.shtml
Josh, Paramesotriton males are often very aggresive with each other and i keep them separate or as Jenn said in a large tank with alot of hiding places. You may find if separated they'll feel less stressed and begin eating again.
And yes, earthworms from your garden are fine as long as pesticides havn't been used on the land your digging in.
Josh, I would chop them up with a scissors, into pieces no larger than each newt's head, and feed them these until they stop eating. From then on, feed every other day or so---but be sure that the first time you do this, you feed them so that each newt SEES the worm piece and doesn't have to hunt/sniff around for it (hence the suggestion to use a tweezers or, even better, an eye dropper that you squeeze onto the worm piece and maneuver). This way you will know if they are eating readily or not. An eyedropper would be best since with a tweezers you might accidentally poke one of the little guys and do some damage. Good luck!!
You don't always need to chop up earthworms. I always feed mine whole. I've had my newts eat animals longer than them selves with no problems, but probably the best length to feed them is about one tenth to one half the newt's body length.
If the newts are aggressive, small pieces of worms will be better, as there is less chance of fighting over the food. If these are warty newts, they will need pieces somewhat larger than Leanne uses.
Well I always like to give my Paramesotriton big earthworms because then I can dangle two in, coax the newts to opposite sides of the tanks and make sure that they both have one, once they're done, neither one is nearly as hungry and they're much less aggressive.
