I answered a craigslist posting to pick up an axolotl, however, what they had was this guy (see attached pictures) swimming in water with no land. They said they had him for about 5 years and his "horns" (which must be his gills) fell off about 3 or 4 years ago. They clearly knew nothing about him or taking care of him (they also said he didn't like worms--wrong!). It looks like some kind of tiger salamander, but the tail is much flatter than I have seen before. So my question: Is this a morphed axolotl, a tiger salamander, or something else? Also, I have been taking care of him as I would a tiger salamander, please let me know if I should change. Thank you.

Definitely a tiger salamander, i think it could be Ambystoma mavortium diaboli.
The flatter tail may be an adaptation to how it was housed. I´m surprised it survived for so long just in water, though.

Thanks for the help. The salamander is doing well. It does look a lot like ambystoma mavortium diaboli. Being in Oklahoma I hadn't considered that one, but I suppose it could have come from anywhere.

That caresheet is one of the best on the net; I read it when I was learning how to take care of my first tiger salamander.

Looks like a Blotched Tiger to me. That is what I have. It also looks like it is fortunate to have you to take proper care of it. My tiger likes water but only to soak for a bit then she is back on "dry land" & one of her burrows. Best of luck to you.

Also, my tiger also has a find of flattish tail like that. It is flat on the sides the closer to the tip it gets.
