Hi, I have had Cynops Orientalis for a long while now. It is getting around the breeding season around here, and this is the first time I have noticed behavior like this. My Orientalis cloaca was swollen, but he was out of the water a lot, He harldy went in the water at all, which is very strange, becuase all my newts are like 98% aquatic. He kept on puffing his throat (chin), but then he would "deflate" his "throat". I was worried about this, and thought that maybe he was choking or something. I gently picked him up. When I did this, he emmited this blueish-greyish thick liquid from his body, mostly his back. I gently "dipped" him in the water, and them set him up on his rock (out of the water) He appered very weak. I said a little prayer for him, then went to sleep, when I woke up I found him past away in the water. what is going on? My other newts are just fine. Could this be a digestive problem? A breeding problem, or two problems or what? What was this secrection. Someone help please. Thanks you.

mine is doing that too. i have only a male, so i don't have to worry.

Hi Mark.

Sounds like the newt released its toxin.

By the way, at the top of this section, it says "If you're looking for basic help, please use the help forum." That is located here:

So that's where this post will be moved

okay, sorry, I didnt realize there was a forum just for help that was hidden. It is not really help, as IU am more interested as in why my newt displayed this behavior, and why he died?

Mark,
exactly how long have you had this newt and where did you get him?...Sometimes newts from petstores seem alright for a while but then just suddenly die...Also...Since its winter time and I assume you have the heat on...How warm is the water...If its higher than 70 degrees that could be what was causing him to leave the water

The pacticular newt I got from petsmart, and I have had him for about a year now. I did a small heat spike, the water temp went to about 72F, but it only lasted for an hour. And the newt started displaying this behavior the day after, when the water temp was back to normal. But if that was the problem, what was the "chin puffing" all about? And what caused him to be stressed enough to release his toxins? I have picked him up before, and he did not show that kind of stress that much. Thanks you, and I will be awaiting an answer. Thanks again.
