Ok it is very hard for me to find anysort of "play sand" in my area, im up in the northwest us, seattle area, and all the brands that people have suggested i just cannot find. Except the tihetan moon sand which is pretty pricy. Im trying to keep this farely inexpensive. If anyone knows a specific brand name that is carried in the US that would be great help!

Thanks so much,
Mac:p

Hi,

The brand of play sand is not all that important as long as it says that it has been prewashed and is of course, dye free. Any home improvement store should carry it. Toys R Us might have a better grade as mine came from Lowe's and contained lots of small gravel that I had to screen out before I rinsed. In any case it most likely won't be hot pink though...;)

Alrighty, I was gonna go check Target and Walmart as well as lowes and homedepot.
I also was reading on the web that crayola had come out with a corlored play sand, have you heard about it? Haha really would love to get some hot pink sand tho:)

I might go check toys r us today & see what they have.

No, I hadn't heard about the crayola - might have to check that out myself. Hope you had some luck in your search - take care! :D

Hi,

I was in walmart today and saw hot pink crayola sand. I don't know if it is safe to use or not but I'm sure if the walmart in your area doesn't carry it you could order online and ship it to the store for free. Hope this helps save you some time running around. Good luck!

I did buy the Crayola play sand. I hesitated because of the dye but it said it was non-toxic and the only other brand that Wal-Mart had contained too much gravel size pebbles. The Crayola is very fine and designed for sandboxes. I read on here to use play sand like the kind for sand boxes. I rinsed it thoroughly and now it is cycling. I put the whole 20 pounds of green Crayola play sand in a 10 gallon tank. It's a bit cloudy still after 1 hour. Maybe I put too much sand it but I read on here that over time, you will lose sand as you siphon, spot clean the sand. Thank you and I welcome any advice.

P.S. The store in Poulsbo carried Crayola play sand in these vibrant colors: blue, purple, green, and pink. I went green.

That's an aweful lot of sand for a 10 gallon tank. I bought a 50 pound bag of sand and it lasted me almost 2 years.

The cloudiness completely cleared. And you're right, Kasie, it is too much sand. I will take it down to one inch as that is what I read on here somewhere.

A 10 gallon is also the bare minimum for an Axolotl. You should consider getting a larger tank that may be a bit more suitable for the animal.
