Help with making a screen top.

Hello.
I'm attempting to make a screen top for my tank, and have found some fiberglass and aluminum screening in the garage, left over from previous projects. Are either of these okay to use, or should I invest in some Vinyl mesh or something?

I'd prefer the aluminum, but is it okay to use an aluminum top for newts? It won't hurt them will it?
 
I've used aluminium on all my tanks I usually just use an existing top,cut a sizeable opening &
stuck the mesh on.
I would make sure that the mesh is completely sealed in so as not to leave any jagged edges sticking out.
I use heavy duty duct tape to do this & it is quite effective.
(since i started keeping newts (again)i have only had one escape & that was when somebody else was taking care of my newts.)
