HELP with found salamander!

Hi everybody
We just found a Slender Salamander (only the second I've ever seen) in my garden. It freaked my mom out and we're going to be tilling up that area today so I don't want to just put him back out there. We live in Orange County, CA and from what I've been able to find online Slender Salamanders aren't supposed to live around here. My question is what do you think I should do with him? I'd like to let him go but I'm not sure where would be best because we're in the middle of the city and there doesn't seem to be anywhere around (that I can think of) that looks like his "natural habitat" according to what I can find online.

I just want the poor little guy to be safe and happy... he's SO cute! Any suggestions would be great!

You seem to be on the right track. I'd do some internet searches for a local area where you can release him. Additionally, you could wait until you've finished tilling and then release him back where you found him.

Thanks for the help... it's dark out and it started raining so I let him go in my front yard under some bushes. My biggest worry was him drying out or getting eaten but with all the rain I think he'll be ok at least until he finds a safe place to hide.

Try to release him near a log or a pile of stone. This way it will easy for him to find cover.

they live in worm tunnels and such under the soil... if you let him go while it was raining than I'm sure he did fine...
