Hi I'm looking to get a 2ft tank in a couple of weeks for my melinoid juvanile as he's starting to get bigger now and he's only in a 45litre at the moment.

I did a test today to see how he'd cope if i took him out of the tank with a net and into a clear bucket filled with his tank water while i did my general water change and tank clean & he seemed pretty content after i gave him a pellet while in the bucket, and then settled right back in without any change in behaivour when i put him back in the tank so he should be fine when I'm changing the tank over for real.

I basically plan on taking him out putting him in a bucket, then draining the tank of it's water and keeping it aside for filling the new tank. Then taking the substrate out (after the plants and hide) and putting it in the new tank and adding the water i siphoned out before as well as adding new water to fill the tank properly. Then once I've put the hide and extra plants back into a familiar layout to the last set up i figured i should let it settle with the filter going for a short while and then put him back in.

Does that sound right to you? I was wondering if anyone had any tips for the transferring process from one tank to the other? or if there's anything vital I'm missing?

The most important thing to transfer over if the existing filter, the water can be discarded. If you are setting up a new filter with the new tank then you need to transfer the filter media to the new filter, as thats where the good bacteria live.

Your plan sounds fine otherwise.

Great! thank you very much! I do plan to move the same filter into the new tank so that should be fine then :)
