Hi all, its been a while scince I posted but now my golden axie is laying eggs and I have questions that dont seem to be answered anywhere!
1. How long can I leave mum in the tank with the eggs for?
2. She seems to be distressed (I would be too) and is wriggling around everywhere! Is this normal it's like she's in pain.
3. Do aquariums take free axolotl's?
4. Will all the eggs hatch?
5. I have a undergravel filter in my main tank and a secondary tank that just has an airstone in it. Which one should be for mum and dad and which one for eggs?
6. How do I transport these eggs without damaging them?
I've read lots of the posts and axie info here (such a great site for that)but I'm tired and might have missed something, so bear with me please.

Airstone for the eggs is better.

Most eggs hatch, but watch out for white clouding as this is fungus. Remove these eggs.

I'm not sure about the wiggling around bit - if she is just trying to get in a good position for laying, then it's normal. i have noticed a fair bit of swimming around, looking for spots to lay, also.

Transporting eggs - I dunno, I've never done it.

As for aquariums taking eggs, you'd best start ringing around to pet shops and aquariums and see what's best. Just as an aside, you could also try Universities - see if they might be interested in taking them.

hi Donna,

1. i would leave the mum finish laying all the eggs (takes about a full day). you are likely to lose some eggs to any adults in there as they don't mind the taste of ax' eggs at all.
2. distressed: yes, i aggree, looks like hard work, should settle down after a couple of days.
3. only guessing nut i think that aquariums would take freebies.
4. not all the eggs will hatch, some will not develop at all, some partial, some go cloudy, get rid of the dud eggs.
5. i don't suggest a filter for the babies just yet, they will all end up in the filter, use the one with an airstone. WHEN THE EGGS HATCH, keep only about 2-3 cms of tank water in it as baby ax's don't swim to the top. also it is easier for them to grab the daphnia or brine as it swims by.
6. the female lays her eggs and attaches the eggs to the plants, logs, and anything else you have in the tank.
leave the eggs attached to these things.
handling eggs is a lot messier/stickier and trickier than you would think. also removing them from what they are already attached to will only mean that the eggs will drop to the bottom of the tank and consequently will not get as good circulating water around them.

keep us posted, you will learn a little something from all the bods on this forum and from any trial and errors you make. you will undoubtedly be passing on your own experiences soon.

Thanks all, I'm lucky I'm in a school (teacher) so that I can have all these tanks. I've transfered the majority of the eggs to a tank with an airstone and the rest of the eggs I think that I have to freeze, is it bad for axie's to eat the eggs? If not it seems easier to let them get eaten rather than killing them in the freezer.Let me know what you think.
Donna

i don't think it is bad for them, i would find my lot amongst the plants looking rather full.
i suppose this would serve as a food source for those ax's that are (or what would have been) in the wild (if there are any left).

hi all, my axie eggs are coming along nicely! the whole class is really exited, we saw them start to 'twich' we sat and ate our luch in front of the tank they are in and everytime they twiched the class cheered! it was fantastic! (this type of stuff is what you live for as a teacher!) i can see that some are golden like mum and some are spotty like dad (who's name is incedentally, Spotty!) I'm going to feed them brine shrimp ( I have bought some already) but the aquarium lady said that the brine shrimp would die in seven days! is there a way that I can keep them from dying? ( they're so cute!. Anyway I hope to get some cool as pics on here soon. The class is keeping a diary of their growth antd I'm taking macro pics of them every other day! This is totally the most exiting thing in the class! (My class from last year is so jelous!) If anyone can help me witht he brine shrimp it would be great, the brine shrimp told me not much. Or maybe I didn't get it!
Donna!!!

are they adult brineshrimp? because they will be too big to feed newly hatched axies. if you want to feed brineshrimp you will have to hatch some eggs for them. if you are unable to get these then daphnia is a good food source which wont foul the water and will stay in the water until they are eaten.

.im looking forward to seeing pics of the azies when they hatch. hehe.

I think axolotls are great pets for kids. More interesting than fish and they don't smell - I remember how the high school science corridor always used to smell like MICE

. I'm glad your kids are taking an interest.

Claire's right - you'll need to hatch your own. Food needs to be live, so you could also try and find microworms.

Thanks Everyone! but do you know where to get daphinia in melbourne Aust?
