This is my setup for my two lotls, it's a 15 gallon tank because they're still juveniles

I've had the tank set up for about 3 weeks and it's still quite murky, the sand was very well rinsed and was not initially cloudy when I filled it with water. I just got a new aquatop IFE 10 filter, I've had it running for 48hr and it doesn't seem to be making much difference over a generic brand submersible sponge filter. Any thoughts??

They still seem to be quite content, but I'd like to see them better!

I dont no if you can get it where you are from but I used a thing called green away and in hours my water was crystal clear =] google it x

I assume your tank is cycled?

What colour is the cloudiness? If it's green it could be algae bloom - this is often caused by high nitrates and too much light. Your filter should take care of it eventually, it will take time. You can reduce this by turning off any lights and adding real plants to absorb the nitrates.

If it's brown it could be a different type of algae, and is sometimes caused by silicates (from sand) and low light. Again, your filter should take care of it, and it will settle down.

With either of those 2 you can take out your ornaments and give them a rinse in dechlorinated water to clean them.

If it looks white it could be bacterial bloom - common in new tanks and it's usually the 'good' bacteria. It will colonise your filter, settle on your ornaments, and do it's job converting ammonia to nitrates. No need to celan anything.

Thanks for the replies :) seems much more clear now! I think it just needed a bit of time with the new filter
