Hi. One of my axies has become really ill. He started off by losin the fluffy bits on his gills. It has gone from bad to worse last few days as he has like a white mold all over his tail and back. He is in a very bad way. Does anyone know what this could be? He isnt eating very much either. Thanks In Advance

Dave - sounds like fungus and possibly water quality and or heat problems.

There are lots of threads started with these topics in them. You should read them.

You should start salt baths for the fungus, check the water quality (test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) and temp to try and find out the cause.

http://www.axolotl.org/health.htm

says...

Place the animal in a salt bath for about 10 minutes once or twice a day. A salt bath is prepared using 2-3 teaspoons of salt (table salt, cooking salt, or iodized salt, but not "low" or "low-sodium" salt) per litre/two pints. Don't leave the Axolotl in the salt bath for more than 15 minutes each time, because the salt will start to damage the Axolotl's skin and particularly its gills. Of course, this is all useless if the animal is still under stress when put back in its aquarium (strong-flowing water, high water temperature, bad water quality, etc....).

my axie lost his 'gill feathers'(as i call them hehe) cuz of the ammonia in his tank.if your set up hasnt cycled yet maybe this could be whats getting him. do the salt baths as cynthia said. they do wonders for fungus ive found. the fluffy bits do grow back after a while

Thanks for the advice guys. I have had my axies for about 2 years ago. I have 5 in total. I have never had any problems like this before. Ammonia levels in the tank are ok. I have the sick axie in a tub on his own. He has picked up slightly in the last 24 hours. Some of the fungus type stuff has gone. I will try the salt baths and see how she gets on. Thanks again
