I have a Spanish ribbed newt that is very bloated and is just floating around rather than swim. I’m new to owning these beautiful creatures so I have been looking for answers before going to an exotic veterinarian.

I mean, a lot can be going on here. Usually, this is due to high bacterial load and or parasites. Your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate could be high, your water temperature could be too warm. We don’t know how long you’ve had them now how long they have been bloated.. it’s all in the details.

Ok, I had two, one is still alive it it’s a tad bit smaller then the one that recently passed but the one that’s alive was the one always on the bottom when they danced. I fed them night crawlers and brine shrimp. The temperature of the water is 70f ammonia should be good because I change the tank every other week because it’s a 55 gallon with filtration for amphibians. But I’ll check it. I am new to owning Spanish ribbed newts so I can’t really make out which one was female or male. I do keep 6 ghost shrimp 2 black mystery snails and 2 ram horns to help keep the enclosure clean.

Where did you buy the newts? How long have you had the newts? When did you start noticing the bloat? Did the newt in the picture die? How is the other newt doing? What is this specific filtration for amphibians?

be careful with the water temperature, my vet said that's why(y)(y)(y)

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
