I have had two axis happy and smokey they both died im not sure what happy died of but smokey died of fungus im worried about my next one because it might have been the way i got the tank ready? im most likely getting a new one tomorrow 14/7/2011 so i need help fast! pleas post some pics of yours or something like that and also give me some tips so my axi can live a long and happy life :)

You should empty out the tank and scrub/clean it completely/thoroughly, as well as all the substrate and decorations (do not use soaps/detergents, there's a number of threads on cleaning used/old tanks here that will tell you what to do).
You might need to clean your filter too- although I'm not sure if this is good advice (Someone else should back this up before you do this- I'm pretty much a newb at fish keeping with filters)

Is it possible to hold off on getting another?
It would probably be better if you could have time to allow the tank to cycle properly.

I think I would break down the tank and give it a good clean, that way I could start fresh. Flush the filter not scrub it.
You will have to cycle your tank all over again, that means daily water checking and changes. Remember we woulddddd like to see photos of your new babie/s when you get him/her.

ok thanks ill be sure to show you my ne w axi when i get him/her in the shop theres a albino with nice big gill feathers and theres also a brown one with big gill feathers and im having trouble picking

first thing first: NO GRAVEL!!!

here's a list of stuff you might want, or should have in your tank:

  • hide/s
  • plants
  • sand/tiles
  • filter

easy choice...take them both:p problem solved.lol.

Sorry for your loss. The most probable cause of fungus is temperature. If the water is kept under 20C fungus should rarely bother you. Keep an eye on temp 18C is ideal for them, axies like cold, fungus likes warm. Also Keep the tank clean and don’t freak out about algae, it is actually beneficial for the water quality, like the bacteria in the filter. Live plants/moss is good for water too.

I agree with everyone above, clean the tank out completely. You need to get any fungusy water out. Wash the inside of your filter with tank water and it will not kill the bacteria, making cycling your new set up easier and healthier for you little ones.

good luck post photos. Take home both :D

i would take both but im only 13 and i only have $60 and there $40 at the store but i would take both if i could ;) but im selling some of my miniatures on the net and if i can i might get a male and female so i might be able to breed <3 yay

Sorry you couldn't get both :( $40 is expensive!!!! but they will be worth it i'm sure. I think choose the axolotl with a colour which will stand out from your substrate. If you have brown sand/rocks choose the albino, and if you have light coloured sand/rocks go with the brown! you will be able to see him better as he stands out more and you can admire his/her beauty.

i was going to get the albino but thanks for the info yeah hopefully some of my models sell and i might get both by the way how much do you get your axis for???

Hi, that sand layer on the bottom of your tank worries me a little. I try to keep a very thin layer of sand to stop poisonous gas pockets from building up. So maybe scoop some out

$40 is quite pricey for an axi... but to be honest I got mine for $40 and I don't really care about the extra cost... but $25 is a more common price.

I love how concerned you are about your axis health at a young age, i hope you keep up your inquiry!!! and good luck! (convince your mom/dad that your new axi just NEEDS to have a friend =P)

How big is your tank? (unless i missed that when reading)

why are you interested in miniatures??? um and my tank is 40 ltrs by the way its warhammer 40,000

why are you interested in miniatures?

People here can have hobbies other than salamanders ;)

A 40l tank isn't going to be big enough for 2 axolotls. You'll really need a bigger tank. It's only marginally big enough for one axolotl.

.

I think it was just an incorrectly punctuated sentence.

He meant to say "Why, are you interested in miniatures?"...as a response to someone asking about the miniatures he is selling.

Oh Eric, you take everything so seriously! I was just having a little fun with the kid, even if he likes playing with dolls (just kidding! "action figures"!).

All jokes aside, I have no clue what Warhammer is. I feel very old and unhip now. You kids get off my lawn!

Hah, don't feel unhip. My brother played warhammer and there's nothing hip about him!
