When I was about 6, I bought my first two newts at the 5&10, probably for less than $2. Since then I've only seen paddle tails in my local pet shops and I'd love to own the kind I had as a kid. I've started to look through the species forum but there are so many, I thought maybe you smart folks could narrow it down (and then tell me where to find one). Size wise they weren't as large or hardy as my paddle tails, they seemed smaller, less firm and just more delicate. The belly was orange/yellow and the newt was what I called "army green" as a kid. They also had the sweetest eyes and were very gentle. No spots or any other coloring but their backs were rough, thy may have had a ridge down the back but I can't remember if that's true or just part of my poor memory. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I am not sure how much help I could be but from the description I would venture to say it might be some type of Notophthalmus species. Hopefully that will help.

I remember my parents once buying me a Taricha rivularis from K Mart. That was back in the 70's during the time when stores had (mostly) just stopped selling baby turtles and monkeys.
