I have been to so many sites, including the USGS and i still do not have clear verification of what species these are. I have pictures of the larvae and an adult about three days after metamorphisis. If anyone can help me i would really appreciate it. I need to identify them so i can build the set up for them. My daughters and I found them in a small pond that recieved a consistant flow of runoff from the surrounding hills, the pond was next to a drainage reciever that controlled the depth of water. The pond was approximatly 2-3 feet deep and was loaded with insects and frogs. We were camping in genesee county New York about an hour and a half south east of Buffalo.

For the looks of the metamorphs face(not an adult), i´d say it´s some kind of ambystoma, but i have no clue about the species....
If it is an Ambystoma, it´s a salamander not a newt, and it will be fully terrestrial once morphed, so i´d recomend changing it into a terrestrial tank or it will drown.

To me it definitely looks like an Ambystoma sp. and the fact you found it in New York, I would venture to say it is either a A. jeffersonianum or A. laterale.

I too think it is ambystoma. Yes I would agree that it is a blue spotted salamander or a jefferson salamander. I raised some from larvae too. The morphs were a lot darker though! Give it a week or two and you will see its true colors and know for sure.

I was leaning towards either a Jeffersonian or A. maculatum "spotted salamander". Either way all the possibilities are terresterial so it was removed the day after the morph. I have run out of tanks so he is in with an Eastern Newt in the red eft stage. They seem to be tolerating eachother for now and i am going shopping today for more tanks. Thanks all for your help and congratulations on a terrific site.

I've raised two batches of spotted sals from eggs, and they are quite black with their yellow spots before they metamorphose. I'd say they're definitely not them.
