Hi All,

I have just bought a 6ft tank to house my 5 babies, they range in size from 8-10.5cm, they are currently housed in seperate breeding boxes above my adult female axolotyl tequila. (she doing very good and seams very happy).

When a "baby" reaches 12cm I am planning on moving it to the new tank untill they are all relocated, but two are larger buy around 2 cm and 3 smaller i may put in deviders between the two.

I would love ideas on decorration plants and filtration, im not sure what to buy for filtration the tank is a 505ltrs. Also what plants to get, i would like plants are i love the look but i donnot have a light set-up for the tank, I live In perth WA an dont even know what the plants look like as when I go to the "pet shops" they just labled plants?, and the ppls working there have no idea either! (guessing big chain stores with young untrained staff)

i do currently have a haela chiller on my 3ft tank and its compacity is 470 ltrs so I may move it to the 6ft and add less water, if this not feasable ill have to save for a bigger chiller. I am planning on buying "play sand" for the tank as the substrate.

Anyway all ideas and help is much appreciated

for plants at least, reliable ones you'll hear time and time again are Java Fern, Java Moss, and pretty much any Anubias. all are low-light plants that can practically live in the dark so most any light in the room would probably be fine. there are others people mention on here such as christmas moss, water sprite, dwarf grass, various other grasses, and a couple more that can have higher light requirements.

basically, any low-light plants that have lower temperate tolerances will do the trick.

at stores, look in the wierd, canister plants they usually keep on a shelf by the fish. they're mostly tropical, but occasionally you can find some Anubias Nana or the like. google image certain types before you go so you can have a general idea of what they look like.

I don't know if anyone uses it in axi tanks but as far as my newts go you CANT KILL POTHOS lol, have no lighting in my tank so it won't bother my orientalis but the lighting from the room is more than enough. Agree on the java moss as well, I have yet to hear of anyone having that die off, it's like a weed. Pothos is nice too because you can root underwater, and the foliage will grow submerged and up and over the water line, providing lots of shade and hiding places underneath. My newst get lots of levels to sit on the leaves and love it, id Say its their favorite plant in the tank (i also have rotala, scarlet hydra [both of which i imagine would be too delicate and get rooted up by axolots] banana plants, ivy, elodea, dieffenbachia above the water line, and will be adding some moss balls soon). I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has used this in their axi tanks.

+1 on the pothos, I've been trying peace lilly too. i have a nice setup in my ten gallon shrimp tank where i crammed the back of my hob filter with pothos and peace lilly and it takes out all the toxins completly.

ooooooh 6ft they will LOVE that  gee when you said you were getting a bigger tank you weren't kidding were you ;)
Sounds like they are getting big too. YAY and so glad your little lady is still improving woohoo one big happy axie family :D

If the plant thing really confuses you come on back over one weekend or in the evening and you guys can talk to hubby about what will live and what wont and he'll sort you out with a heap at a whole lot cheaper than any of the pet stores in Perth by a mile. I'm sure you noticed the hot house out the back  He LOVES his aquarium plants

Chat to you later,
Mere.

Yes I am sure they will love there new home :)

Thanks MereB, that'll be much appreciated I'll give you a call tommorow if thats fine with you.

Perfectly fine my dear. I'm sure Hubby would be more than happy to tell you all about them.

i just put lucky bamboo in my tank, seems to be doing fine with 2x 3 hr sessions of light p/day
