I just bought my first tiger salamander, in larvae stage right now, about four days ago. Since I brought him home he hasn't eaten at all. I've tried salamander bites (pellets), earthworms, crickets. He looks alot slimmer and his gills have curled up and look smaller. The setup I have is: large gravel, 10 gallon tank, submersible-quiet pump. I know you should try to put the food right in front of his face, but he still doesn't eat. Am I being inpatient? Why is he changing? What do I do? Thanks.

if the gills are shrinking-looking like burnt out matchsticks-then it is metamorphosing-you are going to need to change around the set up for a terrestrial animal-put a few rocks in that break the water surface so that it will have a place to come out of water and adjust his life to be a land animal. once fully morphed you will need a terrestrial set up.
